A Very Blue (and White) Birthday!

a blue boy's birthday party

The most precious ride-on car! This lives in Jennings’ room and we’ve loved it for years.

A Very Blue (and White) Third Birthday

Jennings turned three on March 24 and asked for a “blue” birthday. In an effort to delight my three year old I obliged, and because I love throwing a pretty party used it as an opportunity to incorporate classic blue and white elements that are aesthetically elevated yet still playful.

To start on our blue boys birthday party, I had Sarah Gross design a delightful custom toile (reminiscent of the toile in Jennings’ very Grandmillennial nursery). We used this on the invitations and event signage, opting for Little Boy Blue as our lingo. Next, I got my vendors in place for the birthday activities. Luxe Bounce delivered on the party’s entertainment via their new baby blue house of dreams, complete with a slide. Mom’s Kloset accented the bounce house with my custom mix of blue balloons that have flanked all surfaces of my home (from my first Dillard’s launch to Elle’s fifth birthday, which was featured in this book). We also had balloons accenting the entrance and an arch leading the children to the entertainment.

Whitney from Sugar and Slate had the toile print wrapped onto a delicious cake and Erin and the Added Touch team handled tea sandwiches for the adults, toile-themed lunch boxes for the littles and the loveliest accenting desserts. Their team also turned the backyard into a sweet garden party.

One of the last minute touches that stole the show was a blue and white tulipiere I filled with florals. I’ve had this stunner for years but never attempted to fill it with florals and the day before the party realized I would need to water pick each stem. I got the fancier flowers from our floral wholesaler in Atlanta and table blooms from Trader Joe’s. We balanced the table with a chinoiserie vase complete with blooms.

Because the party was in our backyard and was from 4-6 on a Friday, I figured less was more when it came to birthday activities for the kids (they always love the play house), but did have a balloon artist from Atlanta Party People. It was unseasonably hot (after being freezing at the beginning of the week) so the kids balloons animals and crowns did pop pretty quickly resulting in some tears. We landed on balloon bracelets which seemed to last the longest.

Almost forgot to mention our outfits! I wore my blue and white dress from the Best of Born on Fifth capsule collection with Dillard’s. Jennings’ outfit was one from his closet that I pulled at the last minute because it was so hot (he would have worn this linen shirt had it been cooler)! A Pepa & Co. shirt, Cadet shorts and his signature blue drivers. Elle wore this Sal & Pimenta dress to school and ended up keeping it on for the party (I had a toile dress for her that matched George but alas). George wore an Annafie London toile outfit that was originally sent to Jennings (though he never got to wear it). All in all, when you have a wardrobe full of coordinated pieces everything can come together at the last minute!

We used a toile backdrop and some of my favorite cake plates. I filled this tulipiere-style pagoda with florals using water picks as the container didn’t hold water.
