Our Little Boys Birthday Party Theme: Yard Games & Video Games
Since Elle and George have February birthdays and inside celebrations or dinner parties in Elle’s case, it’s always ideal to have an outside affair for Jennings. His sixth was a perfect mix of nostalgic and now as we had backyard games led by a costumed Captain America and a video game truck. It was simple but still special in all the right ways. At this age, I’m convinced there’s nothing better than an at-home celebration so long as it’s outside: the kids are at ease and can get their energy out and it feels fairly effortless.
As always, I took my cues from the birthday boy’s current obsessions and let that guide a loose theme. Per his request, we leaned into all things “gaming.” I rented a video game truck for the afternoon, which, unsurprisingly, was just as much a hit with the dads as it was with the kids, and invited Captain America to make a guest appearance as well. Conveniently, our hero arrived with a lineup of yard games that turned the backyard into the sweetest little party scene.
As always, I had Sugar & Slate create the dreamiest pastel blue cake for this little boy’s birthday, added a few balloons in the same palette, and resisted the urge to overdo it.
We wrapped things up with dinner at La Grotta, an easy, celebratory finish to a day that felt just right. The simplest kind of magic for our six-year-old.
My casual birthday party mom outfit was perfect for the day.
