Elle’s Super Sweet Sixth

Elle’s birthday is always a special time on Born on Fifth as it marks the anniversary of my sharing our world. From her floral first birthday and her swan lake second, to her blush and bows third, pastel princess fourth and most recently her fairy garden fifth, I’ve loved concepting and styling these momentous occasions. It has become a true passion!

When we were talking about what to do for Elle’s sixth birthday this fall, we had just gone to my nephew’s bar mitzvah which was, I kid you not, the best night of Elle’s life. She never left the dance floor. And so, the idea of having a DJ party was born.

I was toying around with a theme and the show My Super Sweet Sixteen crossed my mind…I half jokingly said what about Elle’s Super Sweet Six…and then realized it was an idea that could be so darling I had to run with it.

Elle’s 6th Birthday

Elle and I arrived at the venue early to oversee set up, and because I always like to sneak in a few mother/daughter photos before guests arrive. This year we wore the same fancy party outfits for photos and the party, which was a nice change of pace (in the past we’ve had two looks, which makes for nice pictures but adds a little stress on the day-of…it also means less eye rolls from Michael). Elle’s pink dress of dreams was divine and stole the show! Once it arrived I decided to wear a blush fur bolero that I got on sale around Thanksgiving and a non-maternity dress find that is more spring than winter but mentally I’m there. Also loved my pink platforms…under $150 and very comfortable to wear for hours!

I tried to keep things simple this year since I’m 37 weeks pregnant and didn’t want to have too much to do at the party. First, having her 6th birthday at a venue took a big weight off! I hired the most amazing DJ named Yvonne Monet, and she kept the kids entertained the whole time. We had a photo booth with an attendant, a last minute add but a major necessity as it gave the kids one more thing to do when they needed a break from dancing. Lunch was buffet-style and served on arrival so that everyone could eat as they got hungry and it didn’t stop the party. We also had mimosas and bloody marys for the adults.

Party Decor + Details

The decor was beautiful and a bit more simple than I’ve done in the past in that I had a couple main focal points. The first focal area was the columns flanking the photobooth, which mirrored the invitation and was my grand vision all along. The next was the pink and silver metallic DJ booth balloon backdrop. We had an acrylic sign made that read Elle’s Super Sweet Six and an iridescent backdrop which added to the fun. We had stunning pink tablecloths in a variation of shades and instead of florals on every table we did ivy with three-tiered cakes, which felt fresh and feminine and filled the space nicely since the ballroom is such a grand scale.

I pre-organized all of the DJ supplies (light up wands, glasses, bracelets and face jewels) into bags, so the girls and boys could grab one when they walked in and the DJ could focus on spinning Kidz Bop favorites. This also helped everyone mark their seat. For favors, girls got sparkly lip gloss and boys got harmonicas (sorry boys).

Elle had the TIME OF HER LIFE! I highly recommend a DJ party for the six year old set (or older, of course). Her whole class came, along with some friends from our old school, and it was so fun to see everyone showing off their best moves. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the reason I have all of these beautiful photos to share. Mary Catherine Brownfield did THE BEST job capturing the dance floor. I sent her some photo inspiration (a great idea if you’re having a party with a specific look) and she absolutely nailed it. To be fair, she always does but this was a slightly different style and they are incredible.

Vendors and supplies for this super sweet DJ party are noted and links are shared where possible! All concepts are my own. Thanks to all the friends who partied with us!

The sweetest 6th birthday portraits! Time slow down.

Showing Elle the room for the first time!

Headed to check out the DJ booth!

We got a private DJ lesson with Yvonne Monet, which made Elle’s day!

Elle was so proud!

Then Michael and Jennings arrived for family photos.

We had a snafu with the cakes, so took some photos without it. The show must always go on!

Before guests arrived…we had the dance floor to ourselves.

Party Time!
