I turned forty at this table. Almost nothing on it was mine. The pieces were rented (though Herend Rothschild is the next china pattern I’d like to buy), and the point is that a table does not need to be owned to be considered. What made it work was the curation: placecards, because a name at a seat makes a guest feel expected. A touch of whimsy in the napkins. Crocheted doilies, for texture and a little nostalgia. And the flowers, which are my signature — Tsumugi roses, the Japanese garden roses I return to every time. Hosting is styling, done at a table. The rules are the same whether the pieces are yours or borrowed: proportion, texture, nothing competing, everything considered. Pieces from Fete, a friend. Click the photos or find all sources here.
