Ten Year Rules, No. 3: Know Your Signature

Rule No. 3

Know Your Signature

I’ve been sharing what a decade of Born on Fifth has taught me, from the lens of fashion, for the past few weeks. If you missed it, last weeks was Rule No. 2: The Higher the Heel, the Closer to God.

Today we’re covering Rule No. 3: know your signature. Your signature can usually be found in what you reach for first and often. Mine are five things: platforms, Prada specifically. Peplums. Wide-leg pants. Pink. And a photo style that reads editorial.

Why Have a Signature?

A signature isn’t a lack of inspiration, it’s not reaching for the same thing because you cannot think of anything else. A signature is reaching for the same thing because nothing else does the job better. Look at ten years of getting dressed and notice what repeats. The shape you buy again in another color. The silhouette you never deliberate over. That is the signature, and once you know it, getting dressed gets easier, not smaller.

My Signatures

Platforms, Prada Specifically

My brown pair has seen a lot of air time this autumn.

The heel I reach for without thinking. One shape, five colors, and the proof is in the reel: the same shoe, worn on repeat, because the first pair earned every pair after it. A platform carries height kindly, finishes the leg, and never argues with the dress.

Peplums

Peplum perfection! This exact piece is so special to me.

The silhouette that shaped a decade of my closet. A peplum gives the waist its definition and the hip its line, and it does it in every fabric from ponyhair to cotton. If a dress has a peplum, I’m in.

Wide-Leg Pants

A great pair of wide-leg jeans.

The foundation everything sits on. Long, fluid, and cut to move, a wide leg is the most forgiving shape I know and the most polished. It is the reason the platforms work: the line stays unbroken from waist to floor.

Pink, Blush Only

A blush dress made better with a matching bar.

Not a phase, a position. Pink in a blush register for me. It has outlasted every trend cycle I have dressed through. A signature color is the fastest way to be recognizable without saying a word.

A Photo-Style that Read as Editorial

Sometimes blurry is better imo.

The signature you see before you read a word. Considered framing, shot like a page rather than a post. How the work looks is part of the work.

How to Find Your Signature

Look for the repeats. The signature is the thing you already own twice.

Read between the lines. It isn’t typically a statement piece, it’s the simple one that every outfit is built around.

A signature simplifies. Fewer decisions in the morning usually means better ones.

Let it evolve. A signature is not a uniform for life; it is the current answer to what you reach for first.

Shop the Edit

The linkable pieces are gathered in The Edit, on LTK and ShopMy. Where a piece is past season and cannot be linked, I’ve included the closest equivalent I would buy today. *Comment on the Instagram reel and I will send the edit directly.*

Answering Your Questions

What is a signature style?

The thing you reach for first, repeated until it becomes recognizable. It is not a look you invent; it is a pattern you notice in your own closet.

How do you find your signature?

Look at what you already own twice. The shape you rebuy in another color, the silhouette you never deliberate over, the color that keeps appearing. That is it.

Does having a signature mean dressing the same every day?

No. A signature is a through-line, not a uniform. Mine is five things, and the dresses, the rooms, and the seasons all change around them.

Is it boring to buy the same item in five colors?

It is the opposite. Knowing the shape works frees you to play everywhere else. Certainty in one place buys freedom in all the others.
