If you’re not a planner, this post might feel a bit early – but trust me, it’s right on time. My number one tip for capturing the family photos you’ve always dreamed of? Schedule them well before the holidays.
Family photos can feel overwhelming, especially as a mom. Between wrangling little ones (and husbands), coordinating outfits that feel cohesive but not too matchy, and finding someone to actually take the pictures, it can seem like a lot. If you’re also in this season of life, I see you. As someone who’s constantly behind the camera, I wanted to share a few tips to make it all feel a little more doable. Oh, and if you’re on the hunt for festive fits for the whole family, I’ve got you covered there, too.
Tips for Perfect Holiday Family Photo Outfits
1. Don’t wait until the last minute.
Planning ahead is everything. I recommend starting earlier than you think -the end of September is perfect, imo. The weather is still nice, the trees still have leaves (hello, fall colors!), and you’ll beat the holiday rush.
2. Don’t overthink the location.
Sometimes the best backdrop is your own living room or backyard. These spaces are meaningful, familiar, and so much easier when it comes to dressing, gathering, and keeping everyone comfortable.
3. Don’t forget about your husband.
While you’re putting together looks for yourself and the kids, make sure your significant other has something that coordinates, too. It’s an easy detail to overlook in the chaos!
4. Matching isn’t the goal.
Gone are the days of everyone in identical outfits. These days, coordinated is the way to go. Think colors and textures that flow together naturally. (The one exception? My boys. Since they’re so close in age, I still love to twin them every now and then.)
5. An iPhone Works Just Fine.
I used to feel like hiring a professional photographer was a must for family portraits. And while that’s still a lovely option now and then, these days, your iPhone can absolutely get the job done.
Inspiration from last year! So many of these pieces are still available.
We took these in our living room! It made the process so much easier.
